Buying a site

Postby CPhil on Tue Apr 22, 2008 6:43 am

I have seen a lot of sites for sale and some I am actually interested in buying. Can someone explains how this works?

If I get the domain but no hosting does this effect exisiting PR/Links etc?

As long as the domain name doesn't drop the PR will stay. The backlinks may or may not stay depending on nature of them in regards to the past owner. For instance the links may be some sort of reciprocal agreement or may have been purchased for X amount of time.

I'm not sure why you would want the domain without hosting though. It doesn't do you much good unless you are parking it or going to resell it I guess.

Hi CPhil
If you want to buy a site, you have find some information about that site. You last question

It is well answered by Batmeds.

But If you want to buy a well running website then find the actual owner of the website. Check when it is cached by the major search engine and ask the owner about the revenue proof of that site.

I would be transferring the hosting to my own. Is that the normal practice?

I take it that whereever the site is hosted it should not change PR/Links (Unless of the above mentioned problems).

If the site is in plain HTML you wont be having trouble transferring it to your own host. The problem is bigger when you have to install php scripts to copy/paste MySQL databases. It is quite a big issue. You have to do it very carefully in order to get the site working again on your host. I have no expiernce doing that. But i feel like this is the normal practice.

What site are you intersted to buy? Ready and running site that make profit? They are quite expensive you know. Good luck.

Yah, if you are buying a site, make sure that you specify that they have to keep the backlinks. A friend of mine just sold a site for $30,000, and tons of his links were from the newgrounds forums... and i asked him why he didnt change the links, and he said that ti was part of the agreement of the sale.... i would have never thought of that before.

It is pretty simple. If he doesnt keep the backlinks his newly bought site would loose a lot of its valua and position in SERPs. It is absolutely normal to agree to keeping all the backlins.
