have seen lot of people sell links in their signatures on per month basis. Are they really useful for SEO purpose and does these links are SEO friendly and under google's guidelines ?

The issue is we have to choose those sites that allow "Do Follow" and not "No Follow".The proper combination with good content followed by a link will definitely bring more traffic to the site.
