While people spend a lot of time placing themselves high in SERPs (search engine results pages), they often focus on just a few specific keywords. They spend time acquiring relevant backlinks, and "optimizing" their layout.
What's the easiest way to acquire traffic from search engines? Post about keywords with a high-volume of search queries. Make sure these things are very specific. Let me give you an example.
My sports blog focuses heavily on NBA basketball, and ranks highly for generic keywords such as "basketball blog" and "best basketball blog". However, in June, my highest search engine traffic came from people looking for the "boston celtics" and "paul pierce". Keep in mind that the Boston Celtics were playing in the NBA Finals at this time. Millions of people were searching for more information about the Celtics, and it showed in my blog stats.
How can you emulate this on your own site? Position yourself well for high-volume topics. Choose timely topics that attract interest from tens -- or even hundreds -- of million people. When there are 50 million searches for a specific topic, you don't even have to be on the front page of results to draw thousands of visitors to your site.
